  • Job Title
  • Graphic Design Specialist
  • Job Overview

  • Location: Greenbelt, MD
  • Employment Type: Full Time / Onsite
  • Job Description

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC; http://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard) is the nation's largest organization of scientists and engineers that build spacecraft, construct instruments, and develop technology to study the Earth, the sun, our solar system, and the universe. Goddard's work generates many inventions; some fraction have the potential to generate commercial success or otherwise improve quality of life. Goddard's Innovative Technology Partnerships Office (ITPO; http://techtransfer.gsfc.nasa.gov) screens inventions for commercial potential, markets promising inventions to industry, and establishes partnerships with interested companies - all to help translate Goddard's inventions from lab to market.

Marketing is central to the ITPO's mission. The ITPO must market internally to encourage Goddard inventors to disclose their new ideas (inreach) and externally to make industry aware of the benefits in partnering with NASA (outreach). The Graphic Design Specialist (staffed as an onsite, fulltime contractor via Telophase) works within a marketing team to translate various marketing ideas into reality through a variety of electronic and print media. While a variety of skills are valued (e.g., message development, print-order management, and some event coordination), the ability to generate professional graphic designs within time and budget constraints is of paramount importance.

    Job Requirements

    • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
    • Education: Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience preferred.
    • Tools: Strong proficiency with standard graphic design packages such as the Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) and related tools common in graphic arts. Web programming skills could prove quite useful but are not required. Expect basic proficiency with MS Office products (Excel, Word, Powerpoint).
    • Portfolio: Examples illustrating strong graphic design/art talent for generating very professional products (may include Web, electronic, or print). Should have experience developing marketing materials that include flyers, brochures, booklets, booth displays, banners, and associated materials.
    • Work skills: Ability to work both individually and in a team-based environment. Good interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills (and ability to work tactfully with others). Willing to accept management direction/guidance (i.e., if in conflict, customer requests must trump creative preferences). Strong initiative as well as organization and project-management capabilities.

    Job Duties

    • Develop graphic designs for marketing materials upon request that include but are not limited to flyers, brochures, booklets, presentations, Web sites, booth displays, banners, marquee postings, and associated materials. Marketing materials will be used for both inreach and outreach via both direct and indirect initiatives.
    • Proactively find creative ways to enhance the image and brand of NASA GSFC's ITPO.
    • When needed, assist in the setup and staffing of booths utilized at various events (typically local) that showcase NASA GSFC technologies and the ITPO's support services.
    • Provide any other service that supports ITPO operations upon request. For example, may be asked to provide front-desk, receptionist backup assistance on occasion (several staffers rotate backing up regular receptionist when out of the office).
