Program Office of Education: Education and Public Outreach (EPO) — NASA Summer Internship Program

The Office of Higher Education (OHE) oversees activities and programs at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) designed to maintain and broaden the Center's interaction with the higher education community. Special attention is directed to local colleges and universities along the northern and eastern seaboard and aerospace-oriented institutions nationwide having programs of mutual interest to Goddard. NASA's programs deal with students at the graduate and undergraduate levels, faculty members, researchers, and in some cases, the teachers of teachers. In addition, the Office serves as a point of contact for college and university faculty and students interested in exploring and developing cooperative relationships with GSFC.

Telophase staff and leadership are in constant contact and they are always considering alternatives to more adequately meet the needs within cost — Robert E. Gabrys, Director of Education, NASA GSFC

The Work Performed

Project/Program Management

The Telophase Project Manager implemented the NASA Summer Internship Program's effort. Our team supervised the high school and college participants who were working with civil servants on government projects typically in laboratory environments. Our responsibilities included managing payment of hourly wages and stipends on a bi-weekly basis over a 4 to 10 week period of time, and logistics coordination.

Administrative Services

Telophase assisted the interns with routine inquiries regarding directions, housing resources, GSFC identification and EEO accommodations. We provided and managed an intern orientation and closing procedure in accordance with general employment protocol to ensure interns are properly informed of any necessary corporate information required by law. Telophase coordinated a final NASA-based evaluation of the intern’s performance to determine if the individual is on track to meet mentor expectations and have satisfactorily completed their projects, met the goals and any necessary program requirements. We were also responsible for all logistical action items for any events that needed to be organized.

Accounting/Payroll Services

Telophase has administered compensation via bi-weekly payrolls for internship programs. We also provided a list of all interns requiring housing and the projected allocation to the COTR, CO, and program manager(s) for validation. Telophase maintained all necessary records and performs all necessary payroll procedures in accordance with state and federal employment regulations.

The Results

  • Enhanced communication between Mentors and Students
  • Improved logistical concerns concerning NASA Internship-sponsored activities
  • Streamlined administration process of the high school and college participant
  • Allowed a seamless progression with accounting and payroll requirements
